Omsk State Museum of History and Regional Studies is the oldest museum of Siberia. It was founded in 1878 within the West-Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society (IRGS). The first collections were acquired mainly through the materials collected by expeditions of the members of the West-Siberian Branch of IRGS and through the voluntary donations. In 1921 the museum of West-Siberian Branch of IRGS was transformed into an independent state institution and was renamed in the West-Siberian State Krayevoi (Regional) Museum. From 1923 to 1934 it was called West-Siberian Regional Museum. With the formation of Omsk oblast in 1934, the museum came to be called the Omsk Oblast Museum of Regional Studies. From 1980 to 1992 — the State Joint Museum of History and Literature. From 1992 and onwards — Omsk State Museum of History and Regional Studies.
