From the day of its foundation the Museum occupies a building which is a monument of regional significance — the Commandant’s of the Omsk Fortress House (built 1799). This house was visited by F.M. Dostoevsky.
In 2006 timed to coincide with the 185th anniversary of F.M. Dosoevsky's birth, new exhibitions “Dostoevsky and Siberia” and “Writers of Omsk” were opened.
In West Siberia, Omsk Literary Museum is the only museum of history of regional literature. The museum's exhibition includes tens of writers who are pride of Russian literature: P.P. Yershov, F.M. Dostoevsky, N.M. Yadrintsev, G.A. Vyatkin, A.S. Sorokin, F.A. Berezovsky, L.N. Martynov, Vs.V. Ivanov, P.N. Vasilyev, G.D. Grebeshchikov, S.P. Zalygin, R.I. Rozhdestvensky, and many others. The museum offers a great thematic variety of excursions, talks, lectures on literary regional studies; it welcomes school students to participate in quizzes, art competitions and festivals. Belozyorovsky Festival and Readings, recitation competition «Captivating Sweetness of Poems» and art actions celebrating F.M. Dostoevsky's birthday have already become traditional events. For the visitors who prefer active recreation, walking tours and quests on the territory of old Omsk Fortress are developed.
The museum holdings contain more than 20,000 unique items, which are exhibited on temporary and mobile exhibitions dedicated to the writers and the most significant events of literary life of the region.
The museum workers perform scientific research, study museum collections, participate in conferences, and prepare publications and collections of scientific works.
