December 15 — the official date of the founding of Rostov-on-Don was chosen for the solemn opening of the monument to hierarch Dimitry of Rostov in 1999. The opening was timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the city; the city owes its name to the fortress of St. Dimitry of Rostov. The author of the idea and several projects of the monument was the local sculptor Anatoly Sknarin, but at the last moment the city authorities decided to hold an open competition of works. As a result, the sculptor Vladimir Belyakov won the competition.
The monument is made in full height and depicts a saint clothed in a festive mantle. He stands with his back to the temple: coming out of it, the metropolitan blasses the people with a cross sign. The sculpture is set on a high granite pedestal with a complex shape, the inscription «Hierarch Dimitriy Metropolitan of Rostov» is carved in gold letters on its front side.
